AI must know which version applies
Revenue, active customers, and inventory turns change with strategy, migration, and finance rules. A current-only definition cannot reproduce old reports and may make AI explain historical questions with new logic.
Treat semantic change as a breaking change
Formula, dimensions, time, and access can each alter results. Before release, list affected dashboards, reports, alerts, questions, and agent tasks. Keep at least a manual impact register when automated lineage is unavailable.
Design replayable versions
Record version, owner, status, effective period, formula, default time, dimensions, filters, limits, and approval. Store the semantic version with every result. BuildTable’s exact version, approval, and lineage capabilities require product confirmation.
Dual-run important changes
Calculate old and new versions together, explain differences, pilot with selected teams, and show the active version during transition. Preserve historical output and migration notes before retiring old definitions.
